What Is PAT Testing?
PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) is a process of checking electrical appliances for safety through a combination of visual inspection and electronic testing. A qualified PAT tester examines each appliance for signs of damage, wear, or defects, then uses a specialist PAT testing device to measure earth continuity, insulation resistance, and other electrical parameters. Each appliance that passes receives a PAT label showing the test date and next test due date.

Why You Need a PAT Testing
While PAT testing is not a specific legal requirement, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require all electrical equipment to be maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised method for demonstrating compliance. For landlords, it shows due diligence in protecting tenants; for businesses, it's often an insurance requirement and essential for workplace safety compliance.
Legal Framework
While PAT testing itself isn't a named legal requirement, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require all electrical equipment to be maintained safely. PAT testing is the accepted method of demonstrating compliance.
Frequency
Testing frequency depends on the environment: annually for commercial premises, every 2 years for rental properties. Higher-risk environments may need more frequent testing.
Insurance
Many business and landlord insurance policies require evidence of regular PAT testing as a condition of coverage.
